GAETANO GRIECO AND THE TWIST OF FATE

Last month’s Newsletter article triggered a memory from another Society member that shows us how a twist of fate can impact us and influence generations.

The amazing story from Joe Rinaldi of Rhinebeck, New York, adds depth to our understanding of how and why Gaetano Grieco was aboard the SS Utopia when it and he met tragic ends 130 years ago in Gibraltar Harbor.             Joe Rinaldi related the following story.

“…this story was told to me by my {maternal} grandmother Anna (DiDonato) Miele (1897-1986).

Anna’s parents, Antonio DiDonato (1869-1917) and Giuseppina (Brescia) DiDonato (1872-1951) [who were from Avellino, in the Campagna Region] were to travel in 1891 from Avellino with a friend who was a businessman, dealing between Italy and the US, who would help settle my great grandparents in New York City when they all arrived.

Just before they were to board the ship, the friend had a business situation come up, so he told my great grandparents to go ahead and he would take the next ship and meet them in New York.

Either while still making the passage or once arriving in New York, Giuseppina and Antonio learned of the sinking of the SS Utopia at Gibraltar and the loss of their friend.

Fortunately for my great grandparents, they knew the name of their friend’s business contact in New York City, so they got in touch with him and he was able to help Giuseppina and Antonio get a place to live and a job for Antonio, who was a carpenter.”

So, we now know that a simple thing like the innocent business meeting  Gaetano attended was the twist of fate that changed his destiny.

Che sarà sarà.

HMS Anson and SS Utopia—The contemporary sketch above, shows the HMS Anson (right) using a searchlight to illuminate the sinking SS Utopia (left).  The HMS Anson, had a battering ram in her bow ,which  was struck by the Utopia as she passed the ship at 6:36pm during the stormy night of March 17, 1891.  The Utopia, with a 16 foot wide gash in her hull sank within 20 minutes.  Of the Utopia’s 880 passengers, mostly Italian immigrants, 562 were lost.  The Utopia’s captain, John McKeague was found guilty of grave errors in judgement: “firstly, in attempting to enter the anchorage … without having first opened out and ascertained what vessels were there” and “secondly, in attempting to turn his ship out across the bows of HMS Anson.
Sunken Utopia—  shown below is the sunken SS Utopia in Gibraltar Harbor.  This contemporary photograph .  Work crews, barges and lighters are visible on the wreck.  The square objects on the masts were markers to help prevent other ships from colliding with the wreck.  The Utopia was raised in July 1892 and brought to Scotland where the hulk was scrapped in 1900.

ITALIAN SURNAME ORIGINS

After learning about the historic surnames from Craco it became obvious understanding their origins would be important.
Onomatology is the study of the origins and history of proper names. There are two works that help us identify the roots of the Cracotan names. Prof. Joseph G. Fucilla wrote, Our Italian Surnames, in 1949 and has been in print since then because of its extensive coverage of the subject. In 1985, Gerhard Rohlfs wrote, Dizionario storico dei cognomi in Lucania, an Italian language publication containing an extensive listing of regional surnames. Fucilla and Rohlfs explain Italian surnames came from several sources and that they were adopted in the last 400 years.
Through most of history a single given name was the standard. The Romans began adding a “gens-name” derived from the founder of the family tree. The early Christians and Germanic tribes, both used single given names and they caused the collapse of the Roman naming system. However, between these two groups the hereditary surname system universally used today slowly emerged.
Starting with the patricians in Venice about the 9th century it took another 800 more years for surnames to take root.
The pattern of Italian surnames originally relied on expressing paternity (for example, Giovanni di Alberto representing Giovanni son of Alberto). These were influenced over time by various factors. For example the singular surname became plural reflecting the family that the surname came from (Alberto becomes Alberti.) Another way of expressing “son of” (figlio) also emerged by using the prefix —Fi or Fili (examples, Fittipoldi, Filangieri).
The many groups who invaded Italy also added to the surname development process. Greek, Roman, and Germanic influence are seen as the major source of Italian surnames with a secondary set attributed to Hebrew names.
Greek roots are seen in names like Alessandri, or Greek with the Christian influence like Basilio. Roman examples are numerous and include classical names like Caesar. The Germanic Franks and Lombards while abandoning their native language retained their Teutonic names. These can be recognized with surname endings like –aldo (example Rinaldi), or -mano (Germano). Hebrew names derived from the Bible include Salomone and Vitelli (from David).
Adding to the complex evolution of surnames were other elements that became name sources including desirable or undesirable qualities, botanical, topographical, geographic, animal, anatomical, objects and occupations. Also, in the regional areas of rural Italy each family had a nickname which was transmitted to subsequent generations. Over centuries and generations additional modifications give us the names we recognize today.

Castle Garden Arrivals from Craco: An Insight Into Craco Immigrants Arriving Before 1892

Ellis Island has become synonymous with immigration into the United States but there were several other locations around the country that served as earlier points of entry. One of these, commonly known as Castle Garden is important for anyone researching an ancestor that arrived in New York Harbor from Craco before 1890.
Based on Note Storiche sul Comune di Craco, the history of the town of Craco, the first immigrant to come to America from arrived in 1880. (1) The Castle Garden Immigration Station operated from 1855 to April 19, 1890 so the earliest immigrants entered through this location.

After that, immigrants entered New York through an immigration site known as The Barge Office located at the foot of Whitehall Street near the Battery at the southeast end of Manhattan until January 1, 1892 when the Ellis Island immigration station opened. The Barge Office operated again from June 13, 1897 through December 16, 1900 after the original wooden structure of the Ellis Island immigration station burned to the ground and until the new Ellis Island facility reopened. (2)

Although researchers can use the well known Ellis Island website  to find information about ancestors entering the US, the content there only covers the period from 1892-1924.  The Castle Garden website allows individuals to researching ancestors that came to the US before 1892.  For example, the list of 50 names that follows represents individuals who can be identified as coming from Craco through the Castle Garden Immigration Station before 1892, based on their reporting the town on the ship’s manifest when they boarded.

This list is by no means exhaustive, since the “Place of Last Residence” wasn’t always required or a misspelling of the town name did not produce a match. Individual searches on the Castle Garden website should be conducted to locate records before 1892.

Craco Foglio Di Famiglia   1904 ~ 1907

From 1904-1907, 259 individuals left their native town of Craco and immigrated to New York.

Year          Number Entering NYC
1904          50
1905          104
1906          52
1907          53

To leave Italy and enter the US, documents were required.  A few of these records are still in the Craco town archives and were made available to The Craco Society in December 2007.

The records vary based on the emigration documents the individual needed, but include birth certificates, requests for passports, letters, and authorization for adults to accompany minors. There are also folders from 1930 that are a “Foglio Di Famiglia” which provides a family tree for individuals who lived in New York City or Brooklyn, NY. The following is a list of the individuals in the records. A copy can be obtained by requesting them from us. Craco Vital Records

Fr. Nick Mormando has kindly donated a large amount of material to the Society to assist other members in researching family history.  The material consists of selected vital records from Craco that he acquired while researching his family.

Besides the obvious information in the records about the event this material also contains valuable information about the individuals who were listed as witnesses.  These individuals are identified by name, occupation, age, and father’s name.  This information about an ancestor appearing in these records can be used to add to you family history.

The records mainly come from the period of 1901-1910.  Although they do not reflect all the vital records for the town during these years they include several items recording events occurring in New York that were sent back to Italy to be recorded in the Craco vital records.
To obtain more information about an individual or a copy of the record that is listed please click to email us your request.

The Lost Neighborhood of New York’s Lower East Side

The neighborhood that many of our ancestors first called home in America underwent major changes during the mid twentieth century.  Row upon row of tenement houses were razed and replaced by low to middle income housing projects, to raise the standard of living for the residents of Manhattan’s lower east side. Although most of the buildings our ancestors once called home, as well as the streets they roamed, are long gone, through old maps and photos, we can travel back in time to see their new home as it looked to them.

Map dated 1891 shows the location of 42 and 44 Baxter St.

This map dated 1891 shows the location of 42 and 44 Baxter St. Examining Ellis Island immigration documents, an overwhelming majority of immigrants from Craco reported this as their destination in the New World.  Although the buildings were destroyed in the early twentieth century for the construction of the City of New York Clerk’s Office, this area remains an important part of the Crachesi migration to America. Directly across Baxter St. from this address is now Columbus Park. The park, originally called Mulberry Bend Park, replaced slum housing with trees, grass and flowers. The park opened in the summer of 1897 with bench lined curved walkways and an expansive open grassy area.  It was renamed Columbus Park in 1911. No doubt many of our ancestors roamed this urban oasis in an attempt to escape the overcrowded and unfamiliar life in New York.

Mulberry Bend, circa 1890. The park would soon replace the buildings.

On the left is where 42 and 44 Baxter St. once stood, now the rear of the City of New York Clerk’s Office.  The building straight ahead is the City of New York Criminal Court Building, and Columbus Park can be seen on the right.  (Photo from Google Earth.)

The area located just south (across Park Row) from Baxter Street also was a popular area inhabited by many Crachesi immigrants. Their main house of worship was San Joachim’s Church, located at 22-26 Roosevelt St. By 1926, the large influx of Italian-American immigrants created the need for a larger, more modern Church in the neighborhood. The tiny Church of San Giuseppe (founded in 1887) moved one-half block north, from 65 Catherine St. to a new, larger Church at 5 Monroe St.  The block surrounded by Catherine, Monroe, Cherry and Market Streets, including Hamilton St. was notorious for squalid living conditions and became known as “Lung Block” for the prevalence of tuberculosis. In 1933, the area was demolished and construction of Knickerbocker Village, the twin 13 story buildings with 1,590 residents, began. By 1958, most of the areas outlined in black (including San Joachim) had fallen to the wrecking ball in preparation for more housing projects.  The Gov. Alfred E. Smith houses, the largest development in the area, containing 12 buildings, all 17 stories tall, housing an estimated 5,700 people on over 21 acres, began with demolition in 1950, and the project was completed on April 1, 1953. Chatham Green Apartments (now condominiums) were finished in 1960. New York City’s Police Headquarters, at One Police Plaza, dates to 1973, although it has undergone numerous renovations and expansions.  The 32 story Verizon Telephone Switching Building at 375 Pearl St. opened in 1975, amid much criticism about its negative aesthetics and its impact on the neighborhood.

The original Church of San Giuseppe from 1887 to 1926.  It was located at 65 Catherine Street, one half block south of the new Church, which was built in 1926.

The new Church of San Giuseppe was built in 1926.

The future site of Knickerbocker Village.  The now defunct Hamilton St. (Lung Block) is on the left and Monroe St. is on the right.  The rear of the new St. Joseph’s Church and its twin steeples can be seen on the right.  The skyscrapers in the background are (l. to r.), the Cities Services Building (most recently the AIG building and 70 Pine St.), the Bank of Manhattan Trust Building (40 Wall St. – now a Trump Building), and the Singer building, located at the corner of Broadway and Liberty St., which was sadly demolished in 1968.

Construction of  Knickerbocker Village in 1933, as seen from the East River.  The east building’s exterior appears to be nearly complete, while the west building’s structural steel is in place.  The large building in the background is the iconic New York City  Municipal Building.  The building under construction is the U.S. Federal Courthouse located on Foley Square.

This photo of the Lower East Side was taken from the Woolworth Building (then the tallest building in the world) in 1916.  The Manhattan Bridge can be seen in the distance, and the approach to the Brooklyn Bridge in the foreground.  The piers and ships docked are a distant memory.

This photo, probably taken from the Cities Services building, is dated 1932.  On the top is the approach to the Manhattan Bridge, and the bottom is the Brooklyn Bridge.  The dark elevated train tracks can also be seen.  New Bowery and Park Row lived in shadows under the rumbling trains connecting this neighborhood with the more modern Midtown area.  The new St. Joseph’s Church is labeled in the upper right.

At the left, the 4th Precinct Police Station on Oak St. is outlined in red. The photo on the right was taken in 1950 during the demolition of the neighborhood that would soon become the Gov. Alfred E. Smith housing project.  The old station house was among the last structures to be removed, in all likelihood to ensure a police presence remained in the area during these times of change.

Roosevelt St. looking northward from New Bowery and Madison Streets.  San Joachim’s Church, located at 22-26 Roosevelt St., is halfway down the block, on the right.  This area was razed in 1958 to make way for the Chatham Green Housing Project.

An artist’s rendering of San Joachim’s Church.

On the left, looking down the now defunct Hamilton St. (Lung Block), towards the Manhattan Bridge. On the right, looking north up Catherine St., from the corner of Monroe St.  Notice the front of the “new” St. Joseph’s Church on the right.

Celebration and procession of the feast of San Rocco on Cherry St. as it approaches Catherine St., August 16, 1936.  The buildings on the left are Knickerbocker Village.  The procession still follows this route to date.

This aerial view of the neighborhood today shows the location of the streets of the past.

To comply with European Union and Italian regulations, all requests for vital records made to the Comune di Craco need to be submitted via postal mail or by fax. Once the requests are received they will be officiated with a date stamp and processed according to their existing policy.

Requests should not be channeled through The Craco Society.
Regulations in Craco require a charge for each document that is located through their search of vital records in the town archives. The charges are as follows:
• Birth, death, or marriage records – 10.00 Euros per authenticated copy
• Family Status/Stato di Famiglia document – 100.00 Euros per search. This provides information on a family unit that is defined as a father, mother, and children.
• Family Tree – The rates are variable, as the charge is calculated based on the number of Family Status/Stato di Famiglia documents located for individuals in the family tree.  For example, if the research produces 4 generations of ancestors in a Family Tree the cost would be 400.00 Euros.
To submit a request, please print and fill out the attached Genealogy Search Request Form. You must provide the name and approximate dates for births and death searches. For marriage searches you should also provide the maiden name if available. The result of the search will be sent to you via return mail and will include photocopies of the actual records if any are found, and an invoice for the searches.
